Part A
The documents that have to be completed
Which of these apply depends on the estate — not every estate needs every one. Where we are instructed to administer an estate we complete and compile all of it — as part of that work, rather than as a service on its own.

The R250,000 figure is fixed by GNR 920, Government Gazette 38238 of 24 November 2014. Older checklists still in circulation quote R125,000 — that figure was superseded and should not be relied on.
Part B
Documents to bring: already in the house
Start here. Most of this is at home, and gathering it first tells you what is actually missing.

Part C
Documents to bring: issued by Home Affairs
Nothing can be lodged without the death certificate. Everything else can follow it.

Part D
Documents to bring: from banks, employers and institutions
Each of these has to be asked for. Ask for balances and values as at the date of death, not as at today.

Part E
Documents that have to be requested or drawn
These take the longest to obtain, so start them early even though they are needed later.

Part F
Details you will be asked to supply
None of this is a document. All of it is asked for, and not having it ready is a common reason a bundle goes back.

Speak to a director about a deceased estate
If the estate has property, a business interest, a trust, a beneficiary under 18, or heirs who do not agree, it is worth speaking to us about administering it. Reporting is the easy part; what follows is not.
This checklist is general information, not legal advice. The law is stated as at the date of first publication and may since have changed. Using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every estate differs, and the Master may call for documents not listed here. Completing and lodging these documents forms part of administering an estate we are instructed on; we do not complete or compile them as a standalone service. For advice on your circumstances, speak to us directly.
