De Klerk Turner was founded by two attorneys who first met in Makhanda (Grahamstown) in January 2017, when both were beginning their articles at different firms in the city — Jason at Huxtable Attorneys, Tygue at Dold and Stone. They developed their practices in the same environment, shaped by the demands of a regional legal market where attorneys carry matters from intake to judgment with very little between them and the work.
Their paths converged again at Bax Kaplan Russell Incorporated in East London, where Jason headed the litigation department and Tygue headed estates. Working alongside each other in a larger practice confirmed what each had come to believe independently: that the best legal work happens when the instructing attorney owns the matter completely, and that the structure of a firm either enables that or it does not.
They founded De Klerk Turner in Cape Town to build that structure from the ground up.
